Special Issue Information

Health behavior is increasingly understood as an embodied process, shaped by how individuals detect, interpret, and respond to signals arising from their own bodies. Interoception (the processing of internal bodily states such as heartbeat, breathing, hunger, fatigue, or pain), together with broader bodily awareness, provides a foundation for emotional and behavioral self-regulation. Alterations in these processes have been linked to anxiety, depression, somatic symptom burden, disordered eating, compulsive exercise, and difficulties in maintaining adaptive health behaviors. This Special Issue aims to advance understanding of how bodily signals are translated into health-related decisions and sustainable behavior change. Contributions are invited that examine interoceptive and body awareness mechanisms in physical activity, eating, sleep, stress, symptom perception, and chronic illness management, as well as assessment methods and body-oriented interventions (e.g., mindfulness, biofeedback, movement-based approaches). Empirical studies, reviews, meta-analyses, psychometric papers, and intervention protocols are welcome.

I also would like to propose some topics of interest as examples for consideration:

  • Interoceptive accuracy, sensibility, and awareness as mechanisms of emotional and behavioral self-regulation in health contexts.
  • Bodily awareness in physical activity, exercise, and sport, including exercise adherence, recovery, overtraining, and compulsive exercise.
  • Interoceptive processes in eating behavior, appetite regulation, body image, and disordered eating.
  • Symptom perception, somatic symptom burden, pain, and fatigue: the role of interoceptive attention and interpretation in illness behavior and health care use.
  • Interoception, stress, anxiety, and sleep, including transdiagnostic models linking bodily signals to mental health outcomes.
  • Assessment of interoception and bodily awareness: psychometric validation, measurement invariance, behavioral and physiological tasks, and ecological momentary assessment.
  • The interplay between internal bodily signals and external bodily feedback (e.g., wearables, self-tracking) in health self-regulation.

•      Body-oriented and interoception-based interventions (e.g., mindfulness, biofeedback, yoga, movement-based practices) for sustainable health behavior change.
